Ko wai Matou
Te Kohu Outback Adventures is a locally owned and operated business that aims to provide education through outdoors adventure guiding. We are based in the beautiful central Bay of Plenty, working in the wider central north island. Established in 2025 with the intent to support our communities and provide a deeper understanding from a Maori perspective of the land in regards to the tourism industry, our team has over 20 years of knowledge about environmental conservation, ancestral knowledge, teaching and guiding experience.
Our team specialize in trekking, hunting and camping throughout the Tongariro national park and wider bay of Plenty, including but not limited to, New Zealand’s best one-day walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, The southern hemisphere’s largest man-made forest, the Kaingaroa Forest, and the majestical Te Urewera National Park. We operate all year round, weather permitting different adventures.
Cultural appreciation is at the forefront of what we do and utilising knowledge handed down through generations and certified knowledge is how we provide an exceptional experience for all levels of disciplines. From novice to professionals, our team can cater our guides to your needs and provide an illuminating time well spent within a beautiful part of the country. We aim to inspire ongoing care and responsibility for the natural world through experiential education and reflection.
Our guided outdoor experiences are not just recreational — they are journeys of reconnection and transformation. Participants learn navigation, survival, environmental monitoring, and cultural storytelling, all framed within the principles of manaakitanga (care), whanaungatanga (connection), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
We recognise that true transformation happens when everyone has a voice and a role in the journey. By nurturing partnerships based on respect, reciprocity, and shared vision, we ensure that the outcomes of our work endure beyond each individual experience.
